2. Fuengirola to Caminito del Rey by Train

While there isn’t a direct train from Fuengirola to Caminito del Rey, you can still make the trip with a change in Malaga.

Take the C1 Cercanías train from Fuengirola to Málaga María Zambrano. From there, change to a Renfe service from Málaga María Zambrano to El Chorro–Caminito del Rey. Then take the Caminito del Rey shuttle from El Chorro to the northern access. Walk from the shuttle stop to the control cabin.

The C1 journey from Fuengirola to Málaga María Zambrano takes approximately 40–45 minutes. The direct journey from Málaga to El Chorro normally takes around 40–55 minutes, depending on the service.

These are separate rail services, and trains to El Chorro are much less frequent than the C1. Including the change in Málaga, waiting time, shuttle and access walk, allow approximately 2½–3 hours to reach the northern control cabin from Fuengirola.

Changing Trains in Málaga

Leave the C1 at Málaga María Zambrano, not Málaga Centro-Alameda. María Zambrano is the main railway station and where the onward El Chorro services depart.

Allow enough time to:

  • – Leave the Cercanías platform.
  • – Find the correct departure platform.
  • – Purchase or validate the appropriate onward ticket.
  • – Account for any delays on the C1.

After leaving the controlled route and returning your helmet, allow approximately 20–30 minutes to reach the El Chorro station area.

Choose your parking location before leaving Fuengirola. Parking is available at several points, but each one works differently because the Caminito del Rey is a one-way route:

– Visitors’ Reception Centre: The most straightforward choice for first-time visitors, with official parking and a shuttle connection to the northern access.

– Northern access near El Kiosko: Convenient if you want to park close to the start, near “Restaurante El Mirador Ardales” or the parking municipal de Ardales, although you will need to take the shuttle back from El Chorro after finishing.

– El Chorro: Useful if you prefer to finish near your car, but you must take the shuttle north before beginning the walk.
